2012 Workshop Series:

I have long been interested in exploring what the term “yoga” means. Not only the physical asana work, with the excellent health benefits that comes out of it; but also a deeper understanding of yoga beyond the asana class setting. In this exploring, I have assembled some course notes coming from a number of different threads. This material is aimed at interested yoga students, student teachers or teachers - primarily in the context of pursuing yoga beyond the asana class setting. Broadly, this material is coming out of my own work in pursuing an understanding of yoga, and human experience generally. This material reflects over thirty years of exploring and will probably remain a work-in-progress for the rest of my life as my own practice and understanding develop.

I am exploring this material in a series of ongoing workshops. The pranayama workshops will build on and progress from material covered in the 2011 workshops. The philosophy material builds on threads introduced in the pranayama workshops.

This material is in three parts:

The Basics of Pranayama

The Basics of Philosophy

The Basics of the Yoga Sutras

Pranayama

The pranayama material is based on the Swami Gitananda school as taught by Philip Xerri. It covers the preparatory and classical pranayama practices, along with more meditational practices.

Philosophy

The philosophy material is aimed at people with no background in philosophy, nor any knowledge of the philosophy of yoga. It looks at what philosophy is and a way to approach it in the context of getting to grips with the philosophy of yoga. This material contains nothing specific to yoga directly, but sets the scenes for approaching the yoga philosophy.

The Yoga Sutras

This material is based on my own melding of the Yoga Sutra texts from various editions of the Sutras, and also on my own background of over thirty years working with the principles of Surat Shabd Yoga. I have combined the Yoga Sutra texts and melded the interpretations along with the key Sanskrit words. From this we can pull out the main Sanskrit words and the key principles of the philosophy of the Yoga Sutras.
